Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) invites applications for one (1) open-rank core faculty position in Data Science and Society.

The search is open to candidates with a Ph.D. or equivalent degree who have scholarly interests in the way people, organizations, and societies interact with information, technology, and data. We are particularly seeking scholars who have a demonstrated ability to conduct research on those topics as well as design and teach courses that explore the implications of these interactions for international affairs. Candidates will be considered from a variety of disciplines, including computer science, economics, sociology, political science, international relations, political economy, communications, public policy, law and legal studies, design, media studies, or related fields.

The successful candidate will contribute to the core curriculum of the Science, Technology, and International Affairs major, including foundational instruction in programming, data analytics, and data visualization for undergraduates across disciplines.

Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in fields related to computational or data sciences and their applications in computer science, economics, sociology, political science, international relations, political economy, communications, public policy, law and legal studies, design, media studies, or related fields. Scholars specializing in technology and information in the context of international affairs as it applies to public policy, governance, security, regulation, or law are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Demonstrated expertise in applying and teaching data science and/or computational social science using techniques such as (but not limited to) statistical analysis, geospatial analysis, textual analysis, automated content analysis, natural language processing, computer vision, remote sensing/satellite imagery, social network analysis, social media analysis, and machine learning.
  • An active research agenda with a record of, or clear potential for, publication in internationally recognized venues.
  • Excellence in teaching and mentoring, as shown by previous instructional experience and professional trajectory.
  • A demonstrated ability to teach programming, data analytics, and data visualization. The ability to teach undergraduates from a range of academic backgrounds, including students with no prior computing experience, is highly desirable.

Academic Environment and Faculty Support

Faculty typically teach two courses (or 6 credit hours) per semester (a 2-2 load), supported by best-in-class instructional infrastructure. To advance faculty scholarship and professional development, GU-Q provides:

  • Eligibility for funding through the Qatar Research, Development, and Innovation Council (QRDI).
  • Eligibility to apply for a summer research supplement equivalent to 2/9 of base salary.
