About Vulcain Engineering

Vulcain Engineering, an international engineering consultancy, supports global industrial leaders in their transition to a more responsible and sustainable future. We support our customers in the design, construction, commissioning and operation of their complex infrastructure projects that will shape the world of tomorrow. With operations in 17 countries and employing over 6,000 staff worldwide, our business responds to the needs of our clients by delivering high-value engineering expertise tailored to our clients’ most complex challenges.

In the UK, we have a key focus in the Nuclear sector, contributing to ground breaking projects, such as Hinkley Point C (HPC).

The Position: Data Engineer (Nuclear)

The Data Engineer is responsible for building and maintaining robust data ingestion, transformation, and loading pipelines that underpin the analytics platform on Hinkley Point C (HPC). Working from designs and requirements defined within the data team, this role ensures the delivery of high-quality and reliable data to support business intelligence and analytical outcomes.

Some of the main responsibilities of the Data Engineer will include:

  • Review and interpret requirements and solution designs to deliver scalable, maintainable data products.
  • Understand solution architecture and business objectives, ensuring data products support monitoring of safety, quality, time, and cost.
  • Design and implement data pipelines connecting operational systems to analytics and BI platforms.
  • Develop and optimise ETL/ELT processes to deliver reliable, high-performing data flows.
  • Document source-to-target mappings and transformation logic.
  • Re-engineer manual data processes to enable automation, scalability, and reuse.
  • Support the development and operation of batch and streaming data processing solutions.
  • Build reusable BI datasets and semantic models to support reporting and analytics.
  • Ensure data is high quality, accessible, and aligned with data standards and architectural principles.
  • Apply agile delivery practices using Azure DevOps to manage work items, dependencies, and issues.

Preferred Profile:

Alongside a commitment to our values of Care & Compassion, Performance, Team Spirit, and Inclusiveness, we are looking for individuals who can bring the following:

  • Degree-level qualification, or equivalent experience, in a relevant technical or business-related discipline.
  • Proven experience with CI/CD practices aligned to agile delivery, including automated build and release pipelines (e.g. Azure DevOps).
  • Significant experience developing and optimising complex SQL queries on modern data platforms (e.g. Databricks SQL).
  • Experience programming in object-oriented or functional languages such as Python or Scala.
  • Experience using statistical or analytical languages (e.g. R) to support data transformation or analytical workloads where required.
  • Strong understanding of data ethics, security, and privacy obligations, including GDPR, export controls, and intellectual property requirements.
  • Previous experience working in nuclear or highly regulated environments is desirable but not essential

Reside locally to Bristol or be prepared to relocate, as this permanent role does not include travel expense coverage.

Please note that visa sponsorship is not guaranteed and is assessed on a case-by-case basis, depending on role criticality and project needs. Many of our UK projects require high-level security clearance, meaning we can often only consider candidates with an existing, indefinite right to work in the UK. Exceptionally, we may consider visa sponsorship for applicants with niche experience aligned to our core work (e.g. EPR/nuclear new build).

Remuneration & Benefits:

We offer a competitive salary tailored to your experience and background. Whether you're earlier in your career or bring more senior-level expertise, we encourage you to apply if this role aligns with your skills, or if you're open to discussing other opportunities within this discipline.

We also offer a benefits package, both standard and enhanced, which is designed to support your wellbeing, development, and financial future, including:

  • 25 Days Annual Leave + Bank Holidays, with the ability to swap bank holidays for cultural or religious celebrations
  • Matched Pension Scheme
  • Enhanced Maternity, Paternity, Adoption and Neonatal Care Leave
  • Employee Referral Scheme
  • Private Medical & Dental Insurance
  • Electric Vehicle Scheme
  • Cycle to Work Scheme

  • Travel Insurance – for both business and personal travel
  • Employee Assistance Programme

What Hiring Managers Look for First in Data Science Job Applications (UK Guide)

If you’re applying for data science roles in the UK, it’s crucial to understand what hiring managers focus on before they dive into your full CV. In competitive markets, recruiters and hiring managers often make their first decisions in the first 10–20 seconds of scanning an application — and in data science, there are specific signals they look for first. Data science isn’t just about coding or statistics — it’s about producing insights, shipping models, collaborating with teams, and solving real business problems. This guide helps you understand exactly what hiring managers look for first in data science applications — and how to structure your CV, portfolio and cover letter so you leap to the top of the shortlist.

The Skills Gap in Data Science Jobs: What Universities Aren’t Teaching

Data science has become one of the most visible and sought-after careers in the UK technology market. From financial services and retail to healthcare, media, government and sport, organisations increasingly rely on data scientists to extract insight, guide decisions and build predictive models. Universities have responded quickly. Degrees in data science, analytics and artificial intelligence have expanded rapidly, and many computer science courses now include data-focused pathways. And yet, despite the volume of graduates entering the market, employers across the UK consistently report the same problem: Many data science candidates are not job-ready. Vacancies remain open. Hiring processes drag on. Candidates with impressive academic backgrounds fail interviews or struggle once hired. The issue is not intelligence or effort. It is a persistent skills gap between university education and real-world data science roles. This article explores that gap in depth: what universities teach well, what they often miss, why the gap exists, what employers actually want, and how jobseekers can bridge the divide to build successful careers in data science.

Thinking about switching into data science in your 30s, 40s or 50s? You’re far from alone. Across the UK, businesses are investing in data science talent to turn data into insight, support better decisions and unlock competitive advantage. But with all the hype about machine learning, Python, AI and data unicorns, it can be hard to separate real opportunities from noise. This article gives you a practical, UK-focused reality check on data science careers for mid-life career switchers — what roles really exist, what skills employers really hire for, how long retraining typically takes, what UK recruiters actually look for and how to craft a compelling career pivot story. Whether you come from finance, marketing, operations, research, project management or another field entirely, there are meaningful pathways into data science — and age itself is not the barrier many people fear.
