On behalf of DWP, we are looking for a Senior Data Scientist for a 12 Month (Inside IR35) contract. Hybrid working 2 days per week based in London, Manchester, Newcastle or Leeds.

Note: SC Clearance is an essential requirement for this role, as a minimum you must be willing & eligible to undergo checks. Please note, due to the exceptional requirements of this position, (and speed at which we require a postholder in situ), preference may be given to candidates who meet all of the essential criteria and hold active security clearance.

Senior Data Scientist

A senior Data Scientist role involves leading and shaping a range of projects that combine programming skills with data analytics techniques and close stakeholder engagement in order to find, understand and share patterns in data that can be put into action to support and drive better decisions across the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide senior authority into model building, capability development and related design decisions required for analytics or data science within a high profile part of the business (e.g. a transformation programme or digital capability);
  • Lead strands of data science, machine learning and AI work worth multiple £m in AME or DEL or improved user experience. This includes identifying the specific business need, data gathering, determining the best tools, data and techniques to address it, ongoing deliverables and presentations and influencing the business case for delivery.
  • Shape the design and implementation of analytics within Digital solutions and products including engaging and influencing senior stakeholders to identify and support high value opportunities;
  • Disseminate key findings to technical and non-technical audiences in a compelling way that is clearly set within a business context and exploits interactive visualisation techniques;
  • Influence the wider Data Science landscape, defining methods, standards and other best practices. Also making connections with peers across Government and industry in order to help make DWP a leader in Data Science;

    "Fraud and Error"
  • Proactive identification and problem solving using predictive or other techniques to address high risk behaviours across different loss types, and working with other teams to implement cost effective responses;"
  • Collaboration across F&E, Cyber and service design capabilities or service design improvements to prevent and detect Fraud, Error and Debt

    "Service Design"
  • Engage with cross-functional digital teams of product owners, business analysts, user researchers, designers and developers and challenge existing perceptions to identify high value opportunities;"
  • Identify and deliver ways that accelerates the ability of digital teams to "design with data"

    "Cyber Security"
  • Identification and monitoring of known security risks to DWP systems and data, and work with stakeholders to design the cost effective response(s"
  • Proactive use of data science techniques, data sources and technology to discover anomalies, assess capability, and analyse security data in new ways;
  • Modelling, mapping, and programmatically analysing the behaviour of complex entities such as users, devices, and attackers;
  • Inputting into the design and implementation of wider protective monitoring and response capabilities;

    You will
  • Understand and can help teams apply a range of practices. Develops deeper expertise on a narrower range of specialisms. Starts to apply emerging theory to practical situations.
  • Turn complex data into compelling, clear and actionable stories. Shares data communication skills with the team and across government. Presents analysis and visualisations in clear ways to communicate complex messages. Is able to communicate negative and positive information to stakeholders. Able to give tactical and strategic recommendations.
  • Develop and maintain an understanding of economic, social, political, environmental and technological developments to ensure activity is relevant. Ensure plans and activities in your area of work reflect wider strategic priorities and communicate effectively with senior leaders to influence future strategies. Adopt a government-wide perspective to ensure alignment of activity and policy. Bring together views, perspectives and diverse needs of stakeholders to gain a broader understanding of the issues surrounding policies and activities.
  • Understand and can help teams apply a range of techniques for data profiling and source system analysis from a complex single source. Able to bring multiple data sources together in a conformed model for analysis.
  • Can work with data engineers to map, produce, transform and test new data feeds for data owners and consumers, selecting the most appropriate tools and technologies. Can lead ad hoc data exploration in a wide variety of data serialisation and storage formats, from across the business, for data consumers.

    Please be aware that this role can only be worked within the UK and not Overseas.
