About Digital Health and Care Wales (DHCW):
Digital Health and Care Wales (DHCW) is an expert national body and part of NHS Wales. We work in partnership with NHS Wales colleagues and other key stakeholders to provide national digital and data services which support the delivery of health and social care in Wales. Modern health and care services depend on good digital tools, data, and information. DHCW runs or works with more than 100 services and delivers major national digital transformation programmes to support this. In addition, DHCW provides expert advice in relation to cybersecurity and information governance. We give frontline staff the digital tools which help them provide safer and more efficient care. We are also giving patients and the public digital tools to better manage their own health and wellbeing, empowering people to live healthier lives. The Role
As a Senior Clinical Data Modeller, you will be a key driver in developing and maintaining clinical models that form the backbone of digital clinical applications. Your work will support interoperability, the safe reuse of clinical content, and the adoption of international standards such as HL7 FHIR and SNOMED CT.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Leading the design, development, and implementation of clinical data models to support digital healthcare applications.

  • Advising senior managers, clinical directors, and technical teams on data strategy, ensuring alignment with national and international standards.

  • Creating and maintaining HL7 FHIR profiles to support interoperable communication and clinical data reuse.

  • Collaborating with business analysts, clinicians, interoperability specialists, and application developers to identify requirements and design effective data solutions.

  • Driving innovation in healthcare data architecture to support NHS Wales' digital transformation.

  • Managing and mentoring junior Clinical Data Modellers, ensuring continuous development and high-quality output.

  • Leading the development of clinical data standards and ensuring their adoption across NHS Wales.

  • Engaging in cross-border healthcare initiatives, contributing to the UK-wide development of digital health interoperability.

    What We’re Looking For
    To thrive in this role, you will need a combination of technical expertise, leadership skills, and a passion for digital healthcare transformation.

    Essential Skills & Experience:

  • Educated to a Master’s degree level in health, management, informatics, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

  • Significant experience in designing and implementing clinical systems, with strong knowledge of data modelling and clinical processes.

  • Deep understanding of clinical interoperability standards, including HL7 FHIR, SNOMED CT, and related frameworks.

  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence at all levels.

  • Experience in managing and mentoring teams, driving project success, and ensuring best practices in clinical data modelling.

  • High-level problem-solving skills, capable of resolving complex technical and organisational challenges.

  • Ability to translate clinical requirements into digital solutions that improve patient care and operational efficiency.

    Desirable Skills & Experience:

  • Experience in software development, openEHR, and structured clinical content definition.

  • Familiarity with national healthcare standards, NICE guidelines, and NHS Wales policies.

  • Knowledge of health service management and business change methodologies.

  • Welsh language skills (Level 1 or above in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing) are desirable.
