Principal Engineer

Our long-term trusted partner, a leading financial services corporation, is seeking several Lead Engineers with detailed product expertise in one of the following: Savings, Lending, Accounts, or Payments (Faster Payments) coupled with proven experience in real-time architecture decision-making as our client enters their next phase of digital transformation moving from legacy to azure cloud services. The chosen Lead Engineers will be able to drive decision-making in relation to new product road mapping, lead the design/architecture of highly distributed systems, and provide hands-on technical leadership to a team of four engineers, with the scope to build up to twenty. You must have a background in Java, C#, Python, or React to be considered for this exciting position.

Our client is offering a basic salary between£90,000 to £100,000circa (DOE) + 25% bonuswith additional exceptional benefits to be based in Chatham or Wolverhampton twice weekly.

This is an exciting and challenging position, but please only apply if you have Banking systems experience in Savings, Lending, Accounts, or Payments (Faster Payments). This product experience is crucial, as are proven leadership and architectural capabilities.

Your responsibilities will include

  • Lead the development and implementation of a modern cloud foundation and data platform that is robust, scalable, fully automated, secure, and can support the growth of the business.
  • Build Scalable Architectures: Leverage modern technologies to design and implement scalable, secure, and high-performing cloud-native solutions.
  • Hands-On Coding: Actively contribute to the codebase by developing and reviewing critical components of software applications using technologies like Java, Python, or C# for backend systems and modern front-end frameworks for user interfaces (React, Angular).
  • API Development and Integration: Design and build secure RESTful and GraphQL APIs, ensuring seamless integration with core banking systems (e.g., Mambu) and external services like Open Banking platforms.
  • Data Engineering and Analytics: Work closely with data teams to define robust data pipelines and scalable cloud-based data platforms using tools like Apache Kafka, Snowflake, or Databricks.
  • Monitoring and Performance Tuning: Implement advanced monitoring and observability solutions using tools like Prometheus, Grafana, or Datadog to identify and resolve performance bottlenecks proactively.
  • Technical Leadership in Payments: Bring domain expertise in the Payments space, including Faster Payments, BACS, CHAPS, and Open Banking, ensuring solutions adhere to industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Code and System Optimisation: Proactively analyze and optimize existing systems for improved performance, scalability, and maintainability.

Core skill set for this position:

  • Strong experience building and scaling Savings, Lending, Accounts, or Payments (Faster Payments) applications focusing on security compliance and performance is necessary.
  • Strong experience in real-time architectural decision-making, vision, and strategy within a financial service corporation is a must-have.
  • Strong experience coding in Java, C#, Python, or React is a must (we are seeking two individuals with backend engineering capabilities and a full stack engineer who has used React in previous roles)
  • Proven experience leading a team of cross-functional engineers, providing coaching and mentoring while being hands-on is a must.
  • Strong technical skills and expertise in relevant technologies, such as cloud computing (Azure) microservices architecture, APIs, and data management.
  • Certifications in Payment Systems (e.g., BACS, Faster Payments, CHAPS, card payments) would be desirable.
