Job overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic member of staff to manage the pre-analytical section of laboratories within the Pathology Department of Royal Blackburn Hospital and Burnley General Hospital. The department receives approximately 5,000 samples a day for analysis across the two sites.
You will be an HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist, qualified to MSc level, who has extensive experience of working in a large NHS pathology setting.
A flexible approach to working hours will be required as the Department
provides a 24/7/365 service.
Main duties of the job
This role is responsible for supervising the receipt and timely preparation for analysis of all samples received by the department, ensuring that the integrity of the samples is maintained for onward processing by the Haematology, Biochemistry and Microbiology laboratories.
This includes accurate patient data entry into the Laboratory Information System and the supervision of a team of Medical Laboratory Assistants, supported by two Band 4 supervisory staff

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder will be responsible for:
- Specimen reception and preparation of blood and other body fluids and
samples e.g. swabs
- Supervising MLA staff
- Rota maintenance for shift cover, including use of E-roster electronic roster software.
- Co-ordination of training of MLA staff.
- First line management of HR issues e.g. sickness, returns, annual leave etc.
- Co-ordinating and prioritising work within the pre-analytical area.
- Responsible for pre and post-analytic elements of the Siemens Aptio track
system – including centrifuges, capper/decapper units, input modules.
- Dealing with problems associated with sample processing.
- Greeting and dealing with visitors to the department.
- Stock maintenance of consumables
- Sorting and identifying specimens received.
- Preparing samples for analysis in a timely and accurate manner.

Essential criteria
- HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist
- MSc in Biomedical Science subject, or equivalent
- Experience of working in an NHS pathology department
- Ability to work flexible hours to meet the needs of the service

- Evidence of supervising/managing other staff
- Experience of working in a sample reception environment
