Machine Learning Engineering Team Lead - Information Retrieval - Artificial Intelligence GroupBloomberg's Engineering AI department has 300+ AI practitioners building highly sought after products and features that often require novel innovations. We are investing in AI to build better search, discovery and workflow solutions using technologies such as transformers, gradient boosted decision trees, large language models and dense vector databases.
At Bloomberg, we believe in fostering a transparent and efficient financial marketplace. Our business is built on technology that makes news, research, financial data and analytics on over 35 million financial instruments searchable, discoverable, and actionable across the global capital markets.
Bloomberg has been building Artificial Intelligence applications that offer solutions to these problems with high accuracy and low latency since 2009. Our suite of search systems enable aprehensive search experience for the entire Bloomberg Terminal, allowing our clients to type phrases or ask questions in natural language in the Terminal'smand line to search across all Bloomberg functions and access information from potentially millions of structured and unstructured information sources. The search experience aims to provide the answer to the user, point to the documents where deeper research can be done and aid discovery through real time autplete suggestions.
Broad areas of applications and interest include: conversational search models, retrieval augmented generation, dense retrieval models and ranking, efficient and scalable indexing and search methods and hybrid retrieval systems, query interpretation and autplete suggestions.
To help us achieve our goals, we are expanding our group and seeking highly-skilled senior leaders with a strong expertise and passion for Information Retrieval (IR) research and applications who will be responsible for leading a team of ML and Software Engineers that are bringing innovative solutions to AI-driven customer-facing products.
What's in it for you:
You will be collaborating with a dynamic team of product owners, our domain experts, data engineers, front-end engineers and your own colleagues in AI to build high-quality search systems and integrate AI solutions in our products. You will be responsible for thinking strategically about key details around building, deploying and maintaining IR Systems. This includes taking ownership of the data and testing procedures and thinking about performance as well as strategic ways to leverage existing systems if necessary. You will be an integral part of our growth, which includes forming strategies around organizational design and evolution, hiring and onboarding, data andpute, and finally, our research.

Experience in building and maintaining high-throughput and low-latency services, preferably those that encapsulate ML models and pipelines using a modern Model Development Life Cycle. Experience in leadership: managing, mentoring and coaching globally distributed teams as well as influencing technology strategy. Ability to effectivelymunicate and drive results as well as to challenge and influence team members, peers and stakeholders. History of successfully delivering on key initiatives and driving long-term strategic technology plans
We'd love to see:
Practical experience with Information Retrieval problems and a familiarity with Machine Learning, LLMs, Deep Learning or Statistical Modeling techniques Experience with retrieval frameworks and platforms such as Vespa, Apache Solr or Elasticsearch Experience working with annotators and effectively managing quality of services, models, software and datasets, including migration to modern technologies such as deep neural networks esp. transformer architectures including large language models and dense vector databases.
If this sounds like you:
Apply if you think we're a good match! We'll get in touch with you to let you know what the next steps are.
