Location:Please note, both are London based roles, but the MI6 role will initially be based in Cheltenham for up to two years.

Flexible working:both roles are office based. 36 hours a week full time for MI5 and 37 hours a week full time for MI6. We are unable to accommodate flexible working during the training period, however after that time, flexible working may be available subject to business need.

If you apply to work at MI5, you’ll be based in London. The MI6 role is also London-based, but you’ll be in Cheltenham for the first two years. Please note that you may not apply for both organisations.

Depending on which organisation you pick, the role may differ slightly. One thing’s for sure – wherever you’re based, you’ll play a vital role as part of an analysis team turning raw data into intelligence to help keep the country safe. You’ll use skills gained on our varied training programmes that’ll help you make sense of information we gather from a range of sources. And, you’ll come up with creative solutions by making connections, identifying trends, and solving key questions in our investigations.

At MI5, you’ll do an initial four-month training period before taking on your first analysis posting. Surrounded by a supportive team, you’ll develop your skills and put your knowledge into practice. And once your training is complete, you’ll be committed to working as an analyst for the next five years, during which time you’ll have three further analyst postings.

At MI6, you’ll complete an initial induction before joining a multi-agency analyst team. You’ll spend the first six months enjoying a mix of classroom training and on-the-job learning, alongside your cohort and your new colleagues. Once the training has finished, you’ll spend the remainder of your time on the programme enhancing your knowledge and continuing to develop your skills – after which you’ll have the opportunity to apply for roles in London, Cheltenham or abroad to continue your career in analysis.

There’s no ‘type’ of person who works in data. Your curiosity, determination and genuine passion will be valued and encouraged by the friendly team around you. You’ll work in close partnership with Intelligence Officers, passing on your new-found intelligence and drawing on each other’s expertise. Event details

Our Insight Events will take place onWednesday 22 Januaryat1pm and 5pm.The content will be the same across both sessions, so you only need to attend one. Each session will last for one hour. Once you register, we’ll send you an invitation to the events and you can pick which time suits you best. These online events are designed to give you an overview of our Intelligence and Data Analyst Development Programme, to help you decide if joining us is right for you.

We’ll cover:

  • What it’s like to be part of the Intelligence and Data Analyst Development Programmes at MI5 and MI6
  • How our development programme works
  • The application process
  • Our security vetting process
  • You’ll also hear from some of our current analysts about their own experiences and get the chance to participate in a Q&A session.

Skills and Application Advice: This is an online session providing general tips about filling out your application form and preparing for interview:

  • Friday 24 January at 2.30pm, for approximately one hour.

Is it right for me?

Working for MI5 and MI6 might sound like a daunting prospect, but the truth is you’ve already got a lot of the skills we’re looking for. We don’t expect you to know everything, as we’ll provide all the training and support you need to succeed.

To join, you’ll already have (or be expecting) a 2:2 degree in any subject or have work experience where you’ve demonstrated some of the key skills and qualities required for success in the role. We need all kinds of people from all kinds of backgrounds to share different ways of thinking. You’ll be logical, methodical and detail-oriented, and keen to share your natural curiosity and ideas with those around you. Importantly, you’ll also have a real desire to learn and develop.

Before you Register

To work for us, you need to be a British citizen or hold dual British nationality. These roles require the highest security clearance, known as Developed Vetting (DV). It’s something everyone in the UK Intelligence Community undertakes. You can find out more about the vetting process here:
