About the Role

As Elsevier’s Chief Data Scientist, you will lead a high-impact team of data scientists to solve complex, real-world business challenges across Elsevier’s diverse portfolio.In this strategic leadership role, you will be responsible for shaping the company’s applied data science strategy, partnering with business leaders to drive measurable outcomes. This role reports to the Chief Technology Officer for Elsevier.

Responsibilities

Strategy and Leadership:

  • Defines and drives the applied data science and data science AI strategy in support of Customer segment strategies to drive value for Elsevier users and customers

  • Contributes to Product/Solution roadmaps to enable Elsevier wide profitable growth and customer satisfaction, assesses and advises on how goals are best achieved

  • Relentlessly evaluates existing practices to ensure they remain relevant and high quality for customers at sustainable cost

  • Acts as a trust advisor and thought partner to the Chief Product Officer, Chief Design Officer, Chief Technology Officer and Customer Segment Presidents

Planning, Prioritisation and Performance

  • Builds DS capabilities and capacity, re-using where appropriate to be able to effectively address all user journeys of the communities we serve

  • Ensure the effective deployment and integration of Data Science resources into the Elsevier Tech/Product delivery model ensuring adherence to Product Life Cycle best practice and agile ways of working

  • Foster a high-performance, collaborative, and innovative culture where activities and outcomes are closely monitored

Innovation

  • Partners closely with Product and Technology to deliver high-impact innovation and differentiation across new and existing customer solutions to meet future needs

  • Translates research into customer deliverables bridging academic research to production- ready business applications

  • Leads the implementation of Responsible AI principles across the product lifecycle, ensuring fairness, transparency, and ethical use of AI technologies

  • Scans the market for emerging data science to ensure Elsevier remains competitive and where required market leading

  • Drive continuous improvement, ensure outcomes and learning of evaluation is actioned and shared across the Data Science community

Talent Management

  • Foster an attractive and innovative destination for world class Data Science talent. Strengthens the leadership, talent and capabilities of the Data Science team to meet the needs of customers

Technical Requirements:

  • Proven experience in leading large-scale data science and AI initiatives within a complex organization

  • Strong strategic thinking and ability to translate business needs into innovative data science solutions and academic research into practical business application

  • Expertise in AI, machine learning, large language models, and emerging capabilities like Reasoning Models and Agents

  • Knowledge of governance standards, regulatory environments, and best practices in data science and AI
