Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Data Scientist to join their Defence business unit. In this role, you will lead project teams delivering bespoke algorithms across the defence and national security sector. You'll be responsible for defining the data science approach, designing supporting software architectures, and ensuring best practices are applied throughout.

This is a client-facing role with significant scope to shape technical direction, influence future projects, and strengthen stakeholder relationships. You will also play a key part in mentoring and developing other data scientists, while contributing to broader knowledge-sharing initiatives across the business.

Key Responsibilities Lead project teams to design and deliver bespoke data science solutions.
Define project scope and ensure technical feasibility during early commercial engagement.
Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, advising on current and future projects.
Mentor and support data scientists, providing targeted development opportunities.
Contribute to the organisation's thought leadership by delivering training, speaking at conferences, participating in roundtables, or contributing to open-source projects.
Collaborate with software engineers and designers to integrate data science work into AI products.
What We're Looking For Significant experience in data science or a quantitative academic field.
Strong programming background; must be able to quickly become fluent in Python .
Proficiency with key data science libraries (NumPy, Pandas, Scikit-Learn) and experience with deep learning frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Caffe).
Strong mathematical and statistical skills.
Broad knowledge of core data science techniques, such as: Supervised/unsupervised machine learning
Cross-validation and Bayesian inference
Time-series analysis and NLP
SQL database querying and APIs for models

Ability to innovate and develop new algorithms where needed.
Leadership mindset - fostering technical growth, supporting professional development, and encouraging collaboration.
Commercial awareness and experience, ideally including client-facing work and project management.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence and present to senior stakeholders.
Experience leading teams of data scientists, managing project plans, ensuring feasibility, and delivering against strict timelines.
