Senior Data Scientist

London, England · Salt Lake City, Utah · Toronto, Ontario

Your work will change lives. Including your own.

The Impact You’ll Make

With treatments for hundreds of diseases in our sights, we’ve built a data science team with domain expertise in computer science, bioinformatics, physics, biology, mathematics, applied statistics, and more. We work side-by-side with biologists, automation scientists, chemists, software engineers, and many others; together, we develop the tools and methods to turn our experimental data into treatments for pathologies that affect the lives of countless individuals. As a data scientist supporting the development of our scaled transcriptomics capabilities, you’ll be designing, building, testing and deploying both development and production NGS analysis workflows.

In this role, you will leverage this data as you:

  • Developmethods, metrics, benchmarks, models and workflows to help drive drug discovery in a standardized way
  • Buildscalable production bioinformatics workflows to support our NGS assays
  • Create and analyzeenormous sets of connected data for a variety of programs to learn how best to advance drug discovery in an industrialized way
  • Collaboratewith engineering teams to mature your models and analyses and put them into productionized flows
  • Deliverquickly and iteratively, both supporting in-flight programs and building improvements for the long-term
  • Learnto leverage new code packages and data science techniques as needed

Location:

This position is based at our headquarters in Salt Lake City, or at one of our offices in Toronto or London.

The Team You’ll Join

You will be joining a platform development and workflows team that specializes in development of scaled transcriptomics at Recursion as part of our Operating Systems Hub. This data science team is part of a larger cross-functional team that includes biologists, automation engineers, and software engineers collaborating to industrialize our largest transcriptomics platform at Recursion. We are an application-oriented group whose goal is to discover drugs at scale, using the toolkit of computational science in collaboration with our counterparts in other engineering (software and data engineering, laboratory automation), scientific (biology, chemistry, clinical science), and operational (laboratory operations, regulatory affairs) disciplines. We are value-driving - data science at Recursion is not just an accelerating function; it is a core part of our value proposition. As data scientists, we are responsible for showing up as leaders and visionaries, helping to shape how Recursion delivers on our mission. We work on what matters and deliver in timescales of weeks not quarters. We focus on the impact that we are trying to make and the “why” of what we are trying to deliver and are resilient if the “how” of what we are doing needs to change.

The Experience You’ll Need

  • 3+ years of experience building bioinformatics workflows for next-generation sequencing (NGS) analysis, preferably in an industry setting.
  • Experience analyzing NGS data to develop, optimize, or support an NGS assay
  • Experience building and maintaining scaled production analysis workflows, bioinformatics workflows a plus
  • Experience with professional software development using best practices including version control (e.g. git) and code review
  • High fluency in Python and data science libraries
  • Experience creating effective visualizations in Python

How You’ll be Supported

  • Onboarding support from a teammate acting as your “trail guide” for the first several weeks to aid in getting up to speed with Recursion systems and infrastructure
  • Receive real-time cross-functional feedback from your team including code review, weekly manager 1:1s, and cross-functional team meetings
  • Opportunity to attend annual conferences aligned with existing expertise and career development goals

The Values That We Hope You Share:

  • We Care:We care about our drug candidates, our Recursionauts, their families, each other, our communities, the patients we aim to serve and their loved ones. We also care about our work.
  • We Learn:Learning from the diverse perspectives of our fellow Recursionauts, and from failure, is an essential part of how we make progress.
  • We Deliver:We are unapologetic that our expectations for delivery are extraordinarily high. There is urgency to our existence: we sprint at maximum engagement, making time and space to recover.
  • Act Boldly with Integrity:No company changes the world or reinvents an industry without being bold. It must be balanced; not by timidity, but by doing the right thing even when no one is looking.
  • We are One Recursion:We operate with a 'company first, team second' mentality. Our success comes from working as one interdisciplinary team.

Recursion is a clinical stage TechBio company leading the space by decoding biology to industrialize drug discovery. Enabling its mission is the Recursion OS, a platform built across diverse technologies that continuously expands one of the world’s largest proprietary biological and chemical datasets. Recursion leverages sophisticated machine-learning algorithms to distill from its dataset a collection of trillions of searchable relationships across biology and chemistry unconstrained by human bias. By commanding massive experimental scale — up to millions of wet lab experiments weekly — and massive computational scale — owning and operating one of the most powerful supercomputers in the world, Recursion is uniting technology, biology and chemistry to advance the future of medicine.

Recursion is headquartered in Salt Lake City, where it is a founding member of BioHive, the Utah life sciences industry collective. Recursion also has offices in London, Toronto, Montreal and the San Francisco Bay Area. Learn more at www.Recursion.com, or connect on X (formerly Twitter) and LinkedIn.

Neurodiversity in Data Science Careers: Turning Different Thinking into a Superpower

Data science is all about turning messy, real-world information into decisions, products & insights. It sits at the crossroads of maths, coding, business & communication – which means it needs people who see patterns, ask unusual questions & challenge assumptions. That makes data science a natural fit for many neurodivergent people, including those with ADHD, autism & dyslexia. If you’re neurodivergent & thinking about a data science career, you might have heard comments like “you’re too distracted for complex analysis”, “too literal for stakeholder work” or “too disorganised for large projects”. In reality, the same traits that can make traditional environments difficult often line up beautifully with data science work. This guide is written for data science job seekers in the UK. We’ll explore: What neurodiversity means in a data science context How ADHD, autism & dyslexia strengths map to common data science roles Practical workplace adjustments you can request under UK law How to talk about your neurodivergence in applications & interviews By the end, you’ll have a clearer sense of where you might thrive in data science – & how to turn “different thinking” into a real career advantage.

Data Science Recruitment Trends 2025 (UK): What Job Seekers Need To Know About Today’s Hiring Process

Summary: UK data science hiring has shifted from title‑led CV screens to capability‑driven assessments that emphasise rigorous problem framing, high‑quality analytics & modelling, experiment/causality, production awareness (MLOps), governance/ethics, and measurable product or commercial impact. This guide explains what’s changed, what to expect in interviews & how to prepare—especially for product/data scientists, applied ML scientists, decision scientists, econometricians, growth/marketing analysts, and ML‑adjacent data scientists supporting LLM/AI products. Who this is for: Product/decision/data scientists, applied ML scientists, econometrics & causal inference specialists, experimentation leads, analytics engineers crossing into DS, ML generalists with strong statistics, and data scientists collaborating with platform/MLOps teams in the UK.

Why Data Science Careers in the UK Are Becoming More Multidisciplinary

Data science once meant advanced statistics, machine learning models and coding in Python or R. In the UK today, it has become one of the most in-demand professions across sectors — from healthcare to finance, retail to government. But as the field matures, employers now expect more than technical modelling skills. Modern data science is multidisciplinary. It requires not just coding and algorithms, but also legal knowledge, ethical reasoning, psychological insight, linguistic clarity and human-centred design. Data scientists are expected to interpret, communicate and apply data responsibly, with awareness of law, human behaviour and accessibility. In this article, we’ll explore why data science careers in the UK are becoming more multidisciplinary, how these five disciplines intersect with data science, and what job-seekers & employers need to know to succeed in this transformed field.
