British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for an exceptional Seabird Remote Sensing Data Analyst to join our Wildlife from Space team. BAS delivers and enables world-leading interdisciplinary research in the Polar Regions. We employ experts from many different professions to carry out our Science as well as keep the lights on, feed the research and support teams and keep everyone safe!

You'll be joining ourWildlife from Space team

You'll help us to deliverremote sensing expertise and ecological information on the seabird population of the remote island of South Georgia. Our project uses very-high-resolution satellite imagery to detect and estimate the populations of a number of flying bird species using spectral and shape recognition techniques.

Within the role, there will be an opportunity to developskills in remote sensing, image analytics and ecological modelling.

Current projects the team are working on include remote sensing work on penguins, seals, walrus whales and albatrosses.

Some of your main responsibilities will include:

  • Collate existing datasets and coordinate new field data collection on seabird abundance and distribution.
  • Lead the processing and analysis of high-resolution satellite imagery (e.g., 31-cm and VHR) across the South Georgia archipelago.

For the role of Seabird Remote Sensing Data Analyst, we are looking for somebody who has:

  • First degree in environmental science, ecology, remote sensing, geography, or related discipline.
  • PhD in ecology, remote sensing, geospatial analysis, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong experience in handling satellite imagery and GIS analysis.
  • Preference will be given to applicant who have experience of spectral analysis
