Roles Available in Locations: GSK HQ London

Education required: To apply for this placement, you must be currently studying a degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Mathematics, or other subject with a substantial quantitative component, statistics, computer science or a science/technology related discipline.

Please read the degree requirements for each role carefully before applying.

Other requirements: You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of your undergraduate degree but will not have graduated at the start of your placement. You must be enrolled at a UK or ROI University for the duration of your placement.

If you have already graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree and are currently studying a postgraduate Masters, you are not eligible for this programme.

Language requirement: Written and spoken fluency in English

Expected Start date: September 2026

Duration: 1 year (approximately)

Salary: A salary of £27,100 (London) plus a bonus.

Workplace Arrangements: Flexible working via performance with choice (office & home working may be available)

The Roles (2 available)

Role 1 – Biostatistics & Data Science

Degree requirements - Statistics, Biostatistics, Mathematics, Data Science or other subjects with a substantial quantitative component

Overview of the Department

This is an exciting opportunity to join GSK and gain exposure in the fields of Biostatistics and Data Science. Our Biostatistics department contributes throughout drug development and supply, supporting scientists and clinicians in the areas of medicine discovery, design and analysis of clinical trials, as well as non-clinical activities ensuring the quality and safety of products delivered to patients. We do this by providing statistical advice on the experimental design of studies or clinical trial design (e.g. sample size, randomisation scheme etc.), performing statistical analysis and interpretation of results, providing quantitative support to translational medicine practice, and supporting Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls (CMC) and product transition to Global Supply Chain. Additionally, we are growing our cutting-edge statistical innovation and Data Science capabilities by expanding the Statistics & Data Science Innovation Hub (SDS-IH), a methodologically focused, solution-oriented functional group within GSK’s Biostatistics department.

Key Placement Learnings

  • Work in close consultation with professional statisticians to advise on experimental design of studies or clinical trial design (e.g. sample size, randomisation scheme).

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate scientific or clinical problems into statistical ones.

  • Provide statistical support to clients in clinical, clinical biomarkers, or Chemistry Manufacturing and Controls (CMC) groups.

  • Understand the background and statistical methods important for drug development.

  • Work with professional statisticians in preparing analysis plans, building models, QCing outputs, and compiling and presenting the results and interpretations to scientists or clinicians, including through visual presentations

  • Become proficient in statistical programming in R or other software, such as Python and Stan

  • Develop and explore novel methods for handling prediction problems and gain hands-on coding experience developing machine learning and prediction modelling pipelines.

  • Support the development of R packages and Shiny apps to embed statistical methodology and simplify programming workflows

  • Learn the theory of new statistical methodology and how to apply it by collaborating with highly skilled statisticians and data scientists and through accessing various internal trainings on advanced topics e.g. Quantitative Decision Making, Bayesian Dynamic Borrowing, Dose Response Modelling, etc.

  • Gain industry knowledge in a potentially wide range of therapeutic areas, overseeing short-term or long-term projects

Role 2 - Clinical Programming and Business Excellence

Degree requirements - BSc degree, preferably mathematics, statistics, computer science or a science/technology related discipline.

Overview of the Department

Clinical Programming play a critical role within the Biostatistics department. We support clinical research teams by performing programming and validation of datasets and outputs for the analysis and reporting of clinical trial data. Meanwhile ensuring data quality, accuracy and adherence to data standards and regulatory requirements. Clinical Programming collaborate closely with cross-functional teams such as Statistics, Data Management and Clinical teams to ensure data is fit for purpose and meets requirements for study analysis and reporting. This placement year will provide you with exposure to industry-standard tools, methodologies, and regulatory requirements while contributing to the advancement of life-changing therapies. You will gain an insight into cutting-edge clinical research and the development processes, with the opportunity to learn from and network with experienced professionals within GSK.

Key Placement Learnings

  • Collaborate with statisticians and fellow professional programmers as part of a study team to develop datasets, tables, listings and figures to aid clinical trial reporting.

  • Participate in programming activities for clinical trial reporting using SAS and/or R programming languages, whilst adhering to data standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Conduct quality control checks on clinical trial data and outputs, identifying and resolving discrepancies or issues where possible and flagging data issues to necessary stakeholders.

  • Assist in the preparation of standard documentation, including dataset specifications and reviewer guides.

  • Opportunities to be involved in and contribute to other non-project initiatives within GSK, contributing towards development of the Biostatistics department.
