If you want to do more, because you care, we want you on our team.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

As an L&D Consultant specialising in Systems and Data Analytics, you will play a key role in ensuring the Severn Trent Academy has robust, accurate and insightful learning data. You will lead the development and maintenance of our learning systems and data sets, provide high‑quality reporting and analytics, and help drive continuous improvement across our learning offer. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys working with data, learning systems and people—using insights to influence decisions and enhance the learner experience.

What you’ll be doing
Data Insights & Reporting

Design, build, and maintain clear, engaging MI and BI dashboards that:

  • Build automated, repeatable reporting that supports operations, strategic and budget planning.

  • Create visually clear and accessible data and reports for both technical and non‑technical audiences.

  • Manage reporting cycles (weekly, monthly, quarterly) and ensure accuracy and timeliness.

  • Able to develop clear insights and evidence‑based recommendations, while confidently challenging thinking to influence decisions

Data Quality & Integrity

  • Ensure accuracy, consistency, and completeness of datasets.
  • Perform data validation, quality checks, and troubleshooting to resolve data issues.
  • Develop processes/documentation for maintaining data standards.
  • Work with system owners to improve data capture and system behaviour.

Systems & Data Management

  • Own and maintain all core L&D system data sets, including catalogues, learner journeys, records, assessments and competency evaluations.
  • Ensure all L&D data within Academy systems is accurate, up‑to‑date and consistently quality assured.
  • Continually improve the integrity, completeness and usability of learning and competency data.
  • Promote and champion the effective use of AI, automation and technology to deliver high‑quality analytics and reporting.

Stakeholder Support & Collaboration

  • Provide expert guidance to stakeholders on interpreting learning and competency data.
  • Collaborate across the Academy and wider business to embed data‑led decision making.
  • Actively contribute to the wider Academy learning community.

HOW WE WORK

You’ll be based at our Severn Trent Centre in Coventry but expected to also work from our Academy in Finham. With this being such a critical role, we’re looking for someone who can join us 37 hours a week.

You’ll join a caring culture that collaborates to achieve, grow, and develop. Our employee engagement scores are among the highest globally in energy and utilities. That’s why we value in‑person moments to keep our culture alive but also understand the flexibility working from home can bring. So, you’ll usually find us in the office, but working from home is supported, when you need it.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • Strong experience analysing large, complex data sets to generate meaningful insights.

  • Ability to develop engaging dashboards, reports and performance metrics using various analytical tools including BI.

  • Experience working with HR and learning systems (e.g., SAP SuccessFactors).

  • Confident using a wide range of IT applications including BI, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, SharePoint, Power Automate and Office 365.

Capabilities & Attributes

  • A creative yet logical approach to presenting complex information in a clear and compelling way.
  • A strong eye for detail, with the ability to identify and resolve data integrity issues.
  • Flexible and adaptable, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and stakeholders simultaneously.

  • Comfortable challenging thinking and constructively influencing senior stakeholders

  • Technically curious, quick to learn new tools and systems.

  • Passionate about continuous improvement and motivated to deliver high‑quality insights to support colleagues.

Skills and experience are important, but character, positivity, and a caring attitude matter too. We welcome and celebrate diverse individuals, knowing they help us better serve our communities. We seek people who get involved, want to be part of something bigger, and make a difference because they care.

HOW WE’LL REWARD AND CARE FOR YOU

It’s not just a job you’ll get here, you’ll get a career too.

We have a range of benefits that reward and recognise great work and award‑winning training to ensure you reach your potential. And we’ll also help you play your part in looking after the environment and the community in which we live.

Here’s some of our favourites:

  • 28 days holiday + bank holidays (and the ability to buy/sell up to 5 days per year)
  • Annual bonus scheme (of up to £2,250 per annum based on company performance)
  • Leading pension scheme – we will double your contribution (up to 15% when you contribute 7.5%)
  • ShareSave – the chance to buy Severn Trent Plc shares at a discounted rate
  • Dedicated training and development with our ‘Academy’

How Many Data Science Tools Do You Need to Know to Get a Data Science Job?

If you’re trying to break into data science — or progress your career — it can feel like you are drowning in names: Python, R, TensorFlow, PyTorch, SQL, Spark, AWS, Scikit-learn, Jupyter, Tableau, Power BI…the list just keeps going. With every job advert listing a different combination of tools, many applicants fall into a trap: they try to learn everything. The result? Long tool lists that sound impressive — but little depth to back them up. Here’s the straight-talk version most hiring managers won’t explicitly tell you: 👉 You don’t need to know every data science tool to get hired. 👉 You need to know the right ones — deeply — and know how to use them to solve real problems. Tools matter, but only in service of outcomes. So how many data science tools do you actually need to know to get a job? For most job seekers, the answer is not “27” — it’s more like 8–12, thoughtfully chosen and well understood. This guide explains what employers really value, which tools are core, which are role-specific, and how to focus your toolbox so your CV and interviews shine.

In competitive markets, recruiters and hiring managers often make their first decisions in the first 10–20 seconds of scanning an application — and in data science, there are specific signals they look for first. Data science isn’t just about coding or statistics — it’s about producing insights, shipping models, collaborating with teams, and solving real business problems. This guide helps you understand exactly what hiring managers look for first in data science applications — and how to structure your CV, portfolio and cover letter so you leap to the top of the shortlist.
