At Octopus we’ve developed data platforms on cutting-edge technology to provide data services to our businesses around the world. The data platform enables self-service of data analytics to hundreds of data hungry users as well as automation of all our data workflows from simple ETL jobs to ML training and prediction.

This supports work across the whole energy domain, from measuring performance of our green energy generation assets to processing billions of smart meter readings for innovative tariffs.

We are looking for an experienced head of data engineering to lead our strong team and evolve our data platform to the next level. The successful candidate will report into the Global Head of Data Science, a member of Octopus Energy Group senior leadership team.

This is a fantastic opportunity to work on data problems that genuinely move us closer to Net Zero with a company that is passionate about building great technology to change the way customers use energy.

What you'll do

  • Lead our central data platform and analytical tooling teams, helping our data engineers grow and do their best work
  • Stay connected to data engineers across the business and around the world, offering guidance and support to keep them moving in the right direction
  • Keep our data platform rock-solid and reliable, making sure it can handle the demands of a fast-scaling business
  • Shape the future of our technology platform, keeping our tools ahead of the curve in an ever-evolving landscape
  • Keep a close eye on spending, ensuring we invest wisely in the platforms and tools that power analysis and data visualisation

What an ideal candidate will have

  • Experience as a manager-of-managers
  • Hands-on experience working with cutting-edge tools such as those in our data platform stack (as below)
  • An ability to balance multiple stakeholders and set clear priorities for an organisation
  • Experience in supplier management and managing large spends with third parties
  • Managed data platforms at large companies as well as building platforms from scratch at start-ups

  • We employ software engineering best practices to design, test, and deploy our data platform and services using the below technologies:
  • Python as our main programming language
  • Databricks as our datalake platform
  • Kubernetes for data services and task orchestration
  • Terraform for infrastructure
  • Streamlit for data applications
  • Airflow purely for job scheduling and tracking
  • Circle CI for continuous deployment
  • Parquet and Delta file formats on S3 for data lake storage
  • Spark for data processing
  • DBT for data modelling
  • SparkSQL for analytics
