Job Overview

We are seeking a talented Data Scientist with a Geospatial slant to join our Data Science team at Gallagher Re and help lead our Data Science work. You will be joining a newly established Data Science & AI Centre of Excellence within our Digital Products team. You will work alongside experts in reinsurance, data science, software engineering, visualization, and design, applying data science in a high‑impact commercial setting. This role focuses on geospatial analysis and maintaining legacy R applications and transitioning to our Python‑based tech stack. This role is based from our London City office and we offer hybrid working and the expectation is to be in office one to two days per week max.


Responsibilities

  • Maintain legacy R Shiny applications for advanced geospatial analysis, data visualization and reporting.
  • Workloads will gradually shift from legacy R applications to Python Data Science work aligning with our new tech stack and strategy.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary experts to deliver innovative analytical solutions.
  • Gain hands‑on experience with Azure, AzureML, Python, Azure DevOps, and AI technologies.
  • Write readable, well designed, well documented, and well tested code.
  • Graduate level (STEM) or equivalent experience e.g. emphasis on geospatial / programming / computer science is an advantage but not essential.
  • Proficiency in R, with strong experience in R Shiny development. Supporting skills in HTML, JavaScript, CSS.
  • Solid Python programming skills, with enthusiasm for transitioning to Python‑based workflows.
  • Expertise in geospatial analysis (e.g., using packages like sf, raster, or geopandas, GIS, geoserver).
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Familiarity with maintaining and refactoring legacy codebases is a plus.
  • Eagerness to learn and apply Azure, AzureML, Azure DevOps, and AI tools in a commercial context.
  • Machine Learning or Artificial Intelligence knowledge and experience beneficial but not essential.
  • Catastrophe modelling or (re)insurance experience beneficial but not essential.
