About the Role

As the Database Engineer, you will take end-to-end ownership of the company’s database systems. This is a pivotal role in a growing engineering team — you’ll not only manage and optimise PostgreSQL databases but also shape how data supports core products and services.

You will work closely with data engineers and developers, introducing database best practices, refining performance, and implementing modern automation and monitoring solutions. The role is hands-on, strategic, and offers the opportunity to influence long-term database architecture while supporting operational excellence across the business.

Key Responsibilities



Own the design, implementation, and evolution of database schemas across all environments.

Optimise SQL queries and manage indexing strategies for high-performance, scalable databases.

Oversee capacity planning, database security, backup and disaster recovery procedures.

*

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement solutions that align with product goals.

*

Champion database best practices and provide mentorship across engineering teams.

*

Design and implement automation tools, CI/CD integrations, and monitoring strategies.

*

Explore multi-tenant database strategies to support future scaling requirements.

Essential Skills & Experience

Database Expertise

*

Proven experience managing large-scale, cloud-hosted PostgreSQL environments, including sharded and multi-tenant databases.

*

Strong knowledge of time-series data management (ideally with TimescaleDB).

*

Expert-level skills in SQL optimisation, indexing, and performance tuning.

*

In-depth understanding of database security, compliance, and resilience planning.

Cloud & Development

*

Proficiency with monitoring tools such as Grafana and Datadog.

*

Experience using Python for database automation and tooling.

*

Familiarity with modern DevOps practices including CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code.

*

Knowledge of database unit testing frameworks (e.g., pg_tap, pytest).

Collaboration & Communication

*

Clear communicator with strong written and verbal skills.

*

Experience mentoring developers and delivering technical training.

*

Comfortable working in agile teams and cross-functional collaboration.
