British American Tobacco UK has an exciting opportunity for a Data Scientist in Southampton

What are the key objectives and expectations from this role?

The Data Science Team delivers in-house data science activities. This includes, but is not limited to, data mining, solution development, system integration and solution maintenance.

What is the direct impact of this role on the team or organization?

BAT R&D is undergoing a digital and data transformation to accelerate our approach to research and science. The Data Science team is at the forefront of this transformation in owning the automation and interrogation of data to extract maximum value. This role will play an integral part for continuing to drive the business transformation.

This role directly delivers on BAT's core purpose of A Better Tomorrow, via the science and technical framework to reduce the public health impact of our business.

Your key responsibilities will include:

• Developing complete Data Science solutions to support business needs (e.g. automated pipelines, models, dashboards and tools)
• Act as Data Steward for data on the R&D data platform
• Support in the maintenance of the R&D data platform
• Development of automated data handling pipelines
• Development of business tools (e.g. models/software programmes)
• Creation of dashboards for actionable business insights
• Collaborating with internal and, where appropriate, external partners to complete project activities and driving R&D's data transformation
• Be a key advocate of FAIR data policies to internal partners and the wider R&D community.

What are we looking for?

• Demonstratable coding proficiency (Python and/or R preferred).
• Familiarity in building software solutions to solve real-life challenges, ideally within an R&D environment
• An innovation and leading change mentality - challenging the status quo and demonstrating business value
• Strong collaborator leadership skills
• Can work optimally as part of a team and autonomously and has a keen eye for details
• Open to learning new skills and tools to deliver novel projects

Education / Qualifications / Certifications Required

• Relevant STEM degree
• A level chemistry, or equivalent proven experience

Beneficial

• Experience in full stack development
