About the Project

We are seeking a talented and dedicated team of scientists, bioinformaticians, and support colleagues to join the ground-breaking PharosAI initiative - a £43.6M national programme co-led by Queen Mary University of London. PharosAI aims to revolutionise AI-powered cancer care by accelerating the development of breakthrough therapies, advancing clinical applications, and improving access to cutting-edge technology across the UK healthcare and biotech sectors. Read more about the initiative here.

This is a unique opportunity to help build a first-of-its-kind cancer AI development ecosystem, democratizing access to data, technologies, and AI expertise, while directly contributing to patient care and innovation.

PharosAI offers more than a job — it offers a mission. You'll be part of a forward-thinking, interdisciplinary team building a federated, secure AI platform designed to support NHS delivery, AI-driven drug discovery, and real-world clinical applications. You'll also help lead the way in fair, transparent data sharing, patient involvement, and education in AI for healthcare professionals.

This is your chance to contribute to one of the UK's most visionary cancer innovation projects — and make a real difference. This role is part of multiple exciting roles we are recruiting for across various disciplines for this project.

About you

For this role, you will have a postgraduate degree and PhD in a related field, with an impressive track record working with modalities such as genomics (WES, SNPs, transcriptomics), EHRs, and/or medical imaging. Your experience with machine learning and deep learning frameworks, API development, dashboards, and proficiency in programming skills will set you apart from your peers.

We are looking for candidates passionate about contributing to cutting-edge cancer research and AI-driven innovation, with technical expertise, collaborative mindsets, and a commitment to research excellence and societal impact.

The project will be based at the Barts Cancer Institute, part of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.

Pre-Employment Checks for Data Science Jobs: DBS, References & Right-to-Work and more Explained

Pre-employment screening in data science reflects the discipline's unique position at the intersection of statistical analysis, machine learning innovation, and strategic business intelligence. Data scientists often have privileged access to comprehensive datasets, proprietary algorithms, and business-critical insights that form the foundation of organisational strategy and competitive positioning. The data science industry operates within complex regulatory frameworks spanning GDPR, sector-specific data protection requirements, and emerging AI governance regulations. Data scientists must demonstrate not only technical competence in statistical modelling and machine learning but also deep understanding of research ethics, data privacy principles, and the societal implications of algorithmic decision-making. Modern data science roles frequently involve analysing personally identifiable information, financial data, healthcare records, and sensitive business intelligence across multiple jurisdictions and regulatory frameworks simultaneously. The combination of analytical privilege, predictive capabilities, and strategic influence makes thorough candidate verification essential for maintaining compliance, security, and public trust in data-driven insights and automated systems.
