About us:

Billigence is a boutique data consultancy with global reach, enabling organizations to transform how they work with data. We specialize in delivering advanced, value-driven solutions across Business Intelligence, Cloud Data Warehousing, Data Science, Engineering, and Data Governance.

With headquarters in Sydney and offices across Europe, the U.S., and Asia-Pacific, our global team helps clients navigate complexity, unlock insights, and scale data capabilities that drive competitive advantage.

About the Role

We're looking for a Data Governance & Architecture Lead with a strong technical grounding and deep experience in retail data environments, particularly involving personal and customer data.

This is a client-facing, delivery-focused role. You will bridge the gap between technical architecture and business outcomes - implementing effective data controls, advising on governance strategy, and ensuring data is managed with both compliance and value creation in mind.

You'll be working with a mix of stakeholders, from IT and legal to marketing and product, helping them navigate evolving data obligations while building robust governance frameworks that align with real-world business priorities.

What You'll Do

  • Provide expert consultancy on data governance strategy, frameworks, and implementation plans within complex, customer-data-heavy environments.
  • Recommend and define data controls, metadata strategies, and information architecture improvements across retail systems.
  • Lead conversations that span both strategic direction and technical execution - from C-level stakeholders to architecture teams.
  • Advise on regulatory compliance (e.g. GDPR, consumer data obligations) and help mitigate data-related risks.
  • Translate technical concepts into business-friendly language and actionable insights.
  • Support the enablement of Data Owners, Stewards, and governance functions across large organizations.
  • Manage multiple client workstreams and pivot efficiently in response to shifting timelines or priorities.
  • Identify new governance use cases and proactively drive solution design and follow-ups.

What You'll Bring

  • Strong technical understanding of data architecture and governance solutions, with the ability to design and recommend effective data controls.
  • Proven experience working with personal and customer data, ideally in a retail or consumer-focused sector.
  • Solid grounding in Data Governance / Data Management practices (e.g. metadata management, data lineage, data quality).
  • Experience advising on data obligations and customer privacy within a regulated environment.
  • Exceptional communication skills - able to translate complex issues into actionable strategies across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proactive and independent - able to own workstreams and deliver with minimal oversight.
  • Ability to balance high-level strategic direction with deep technical understanding, switching context fluidly when needed.
  • Experience with governance tools like Collibra, Informatica, or Alteryx Connect (preferred but not required).

Inclusion & Equal Opportunities

Billigence is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We're committed to building an inclusive, supportive culture for everyone, and welcome applicants from all backgrounds. If you need any adjustments throughout the hiring process, just let us know.

Pre-Employment Checks for Data Science Jobs: DBS, References & Right-to-Work and more Explained

Pre-employment screening in data science reflects the discipline's unique position at the intersection of statistical analysis, machine learning innovation, and strategic business intelligence. Data scientists often have privileged access to comprehensive datasets, proprietary algorithms, and business-critical insights that form the foundation of organisational strategy and competitive positioning. The data science industry operates within complex regulatory frameworks spanning GDPR, sector-specific data protection requirements, and emerging AI governance regulations. Data scientists must demonstrate not only technical competence in statistical modelling and machine learning but also deep understanding of research ethics, data privacy principles, and the societal implications of algorithmic decision-making. Modern data science roles frequently involve analysing personally identifiable information, financial data, healthcare records, and sensitive business intelligence across multiple jurisdictions and regulatory frameworks simultaneously. The combination of analytical privilege, predictive capabilities, and strategic influence makes thorough candidate verification essential for maintaining compliance, security, and public trust in data-driven insights and automated systems.
