Opportunity

We deal in the personal – from pet insurance for your best friend, and home insurance for peace of mind, to motor insurance for your dream car or travel money for that trip you’ve worked hard for. And that means we always work with heart. Whether we’re helping our customers or looking after our people, you’ll find there’s a warmth and friendliness to everything we do.

We’re looking for a Data Engineer to join our Claims Operational Excellence Team at Tesco Insurance Money and Services team.

As a Data Engineer, you’ll build and maintain data flows and data acquisition processes to deliver well‑structured, efficient, and performant data marts to drive business analysis and processes. Reporting to the Senior Data Engineer for direction (in terms of priorities or technical support), you’ll support them through the delivery of projects and work within deadlines, prompt escalation of risks or issues and ensuring that day to day activities are delivered within SLAs.

You’ll liaise with stakeholders at all levels of the organisation, delivering end to end data requests and ensuring single version of the truth across the organisation.

What you’ll be doing

  • Data Strategy and Analysis: Collecting and analysing data from diverse sources to uncover key themes, assess business impact, and support decision‑making.
  • Solution Evaluation and Recommendations: Identifying and assessing complex, expert‑led solutions, advising on process and system design to meet professional and business standards.
  • Reporting and Insights: Contributing towards the design of reporting strategies and templates, leading complex report execution, and translating data patterns into actionable insights.
  • Stakeholder and Client Engagement: Supporting internal customers and assisting senior colleagues in managing internal client relationships effectively.
  • Risk and Issue Management: Monitoring organisational and project risks, escalating deviations, and implementing solutions to address issues, dependencies, and constraints.
  • Data Architecture and Management: Overseeing data collection mechanisms, ensuring alignment with architectural standards, and managing key components of the data system.
  • Governance and Compliance: Ensuring adherence to data governance policies and FCA regulations, maintaining database integrity, and addressing non‑compliance through appropriate escalation.

We need you to have

  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) with non‑technical internal colleagues.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues and perform business data modelling to support strategic decisions and solve challenges.
  • In‑depth knowledge of programming languages throughout the development lifecycle, such as SQL/Python.
  • Experience with managing projects and workflows with technical expertise, ensuring efficiency, timeliness, and quality across planning and execution.
  • Ability to independently manage data control, lifecycle, and database administration while guiding others in best practices and system integrity.
  • Knowledge of the design and implementation of system / data architectures.
  • Experience with regulatory compliance and the development of actionable plans based on business requirements and recommendations.

And if you have any of these, even better

  • Experience with data platforms such as Microsoft Fabric or Databricks.
  • Some knowledge of SAS is preferred but not essential.
  • Evidence of learning technical skills.
  • Insurance or other financial services experience would be beneficial.
  • Knowledge of version control and data governance software such as GitHub or Microsoft Purview.
  • Experience in the development of dataflows/semantic models feeding into Power BI.
  • Any previous usage of Power Apps/Power Automate.

What’s in it for you?

  • Prepare for your retirement with our colleague pension scheme.
  • Virtual GP Service for you and your family 365 days a year.
  • Performance related annual bonus.
  • Indulge in a generous holiday allowance with a minimum of 7.2 weeks, with the opportunity to buy more.
  • Benefit from our family‑oriented initiatives, including enhanced maternity leave pay, shared parental leave policy, and a generous 8‑week paid paternity leave.
  • A place to get on – take advantage of our ongoing learning opportunities and award‑winning training, to help you achieve the job and career you want.
  • Take part in our Buy as you Earn and Save as you Earn share schemes.

Summary: UK data science hiring has shifted from title‑led CV screens to capability‑driven assessments that emphasise rigorous problem framing, high‑quality analytics & modelling, experiment/causality, production awareness (MLOps), governance/ethics, and measurable product or commercial impact. This guide explains what’s changed, what to expect in interviews & how to prepare—especially for product/data scientists, applied ML scientists, decision scientists, econometricians, growth/marketing analysts, and ML‑adjacent data scientists supporting LLM/AI products. Who this is for: Product/decision/data scientists, applied ML scientists, econometrics & causal inference specialists, experimentation leads, analytics engineers crossing into DS, ML generalists with strong statistics, and data scientists collaborating with platform/MLOps teams in the UK.

Why Data Science Careers in the UK Are Becoming More Multidisciplinary

Data science once meant advanced statistics, machine learning models and coding in Python or R. In the UK today, it has become one of the most in-demand professions across sectors — from healthcare to finance, retail to government. But as the field matures, employers now expect more than technical modelling skills. Modern data science is multidisciplinary. It requires not just coding and algorithms, but also legal knowledge, ethical reasoning, psychological insight, linguistic clarity and human-centred design. Data scientists are expected to interpret, communicate and apply data responsibly, with awareness of law, human behaviour and accessibility. In this article, we’ll explore why data science careers in the UK are becoming more multidisciplinary, how these five disciplines intersect with data science, and what job-seekers & employers need to know to succeed in this transformed field.

Data Science Team Structures Explained: Who Does What in a Modern Data Science Department

Data science is one of the most in-demand, dynamic, and multidisciplinary areas in the UK tech and business landscape. Organisations from finance, retail, health, government, and beyond are using data to drive decisions, automate processes, personalise services, predict trends, detect fraud, and more. To do that well, companies don’t just need good data scientists; they need teams with clearly defined roles, responsibilities, workflows, collaboration, and governance. If you're aiming for a role in data science or recruiting for one, understanding the structure of a data science department—and who does what—can make all the difference. This article breaks down the key roles, how they interact across the lifecycle of a data science project, what skills and qualifications are typical in the UK, expected salary ranges, challenges, trends, and how to build or grow an effective team.
