We deal in the personal – from pet insurance for your best friend, and home insurance for peace of mind, to motor insurance for your dream car or travel money for that trip you’ve worked hard for. And that means we always work with heart. Whether we’re helping our customers or looking after our people, you’ll find there’s a warmth and friendliness to everything we do.

We’re looking for a Data Engineer to join our Insurance Money and Services team.

As a Data Engineer, you’ll build and maintain data flows and data acquisition processes to deliver well-structured, efficient, and performant data marts to drive business analysis and processes. Reporting to the Data Engineering Lead(s) for direction (in terms of priorities or technical support), you’ll support them through the delivery of projects and work within deadlines, prompt escalation of risks or issues and ensuring that day to day activities are delivered within SLAs.

You’ll liaise with stakeholders at all levels of the organisation, delivering end to end data requests and ensuring single version of the truth across the organisation.

What you’ll be doing
· Data Collection and Analysis: Produce accurate reports for stakeholders by collecting data from a variety of standard sources and inputting it into standard formats. Identify and monitor associated Data & BI risks and report any business impact with recommended solutions to the Data Engineering Lead(s).
· Application Development: Contribute to development of existing and new SAS based applications by analysing and identifying areas for modification and improvement to meet customer requirements.
· Product/Service Development: Solve known problems and/or deliver defined outcomes by performing designated development/engineering activities using existing systems.
· Technical Developments Recommendation: Working with the Data & BI team to develop and maintain a comprehensive data warehouse using SAS/SQL language to ensure all data clearly defined and consistently maintained throughout the organisation.
· Data Governance: Develop and maintain data dictionaries covering factors and measures within data warehouses. Responsible for supporting all aspects of data such as Quality, Security, Management, Architecture, Availability and Performance.
· Troubleshooting and Debugging: Provide fault isolation and resolution to limit and address issues promptly.
· Project Management: Responsible for processing Data & BI requests for internal and external stakeholders in a timely manner whilst ensuring data accuracy and audits are not compromised. Liaising with internal stakeholders regularly to ensure assistance is given in understanding Data & BI for improving business performance or operations.

We need you to have

· Ability to analyse and interpret data with good investigative and analytical skills and make recommendations.
· Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) with non-technical internal colleagues.
· In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Office (particularly Excel).
· Proven organisation skills with the ability to work with tight deadlines.
· Able to demonstrate sound attention to detail, ensuring any output is accurate before being passed onto the wider business.
· Experience developing and maintaining strong working relationships.
· Demonstrate a ‘Can Do’ attitude with a desire to thrive in a dynamic and fast paced environment.

And if you have any of these, even better

· Some knowledge of SQL / SAS is preferred but not essential.
· Sound experience and understanding of established procedures or systems.
· Evidence of problem solving, investigative and analytical skills.
· Evidence of learning technical skills.
· Insurance or other financial services experience would be beneficial.
· Experience on SAS VIYA, Jira, Fabric, GitHub is good to have.
· STEM degree is preferred but not essential.

We don’t expect you to tick every box, and if you feel you hit most of the brief, it’s worth exploring to further develop your career here with us.

· Prepare for your retirement with our colleague pension scheme.
· Virtual GP Service for you and your family 365 days a year.

Pre-Employment Checks for Data Science Jobs: DBS, References & Right-to-Work and more Explained

Pre-employment screening in data science reflects the discipline's unique position at the intersection of statistical analysis, machine learning innovation, and strategic business intelligence. Data scientists often have privileged access to comprehensive datasets, proprietary algorithms, and business-critical insights that form the foundation of organisational strategy and competitive positioning. The data science industry operates within complex regulatory frameworks spanning GDPR, sector-specific data protection requirements, and emerging AI governance regulations. Data scientists must demonstrate not only technical competence in statistical modelling and machine learning but also deep understanding of research ethics, data privacy principles, and the societal implications of algorithmic decision-making. Modern data science roles frequently involve analysing personally identifiable information, financial data, healthcare records, and sensitive business intelligence across multiple jurisdictions and regulatory frameworks simultaneously. The combination of analytical privilege, predictive capabilities, and strategic influence makes thorough candidate verification essential for maintaining compliance, security, and public trust in data-driven insights and automated systems.

Why Now Is the Perfect Time to Launch Your Career in Data Science: The UK's Analytics Revolution

The United Kingdom stands at the forefront of a data science revolution that's reshaping how businesses make decisions, governments craft policies, and society tackles its greatest challenges. From the machine learning algorithms powering London's fintech innovation to the predictive models guiding Manchester's smart city initiatives, Britain's transformation into a data-driven economy has created an unprecedented demand for skilled data scientists that far outstrips the available talent. If you've been contemplating a career transition or seeking to position yourself at the cutting edge of the digital economy, data science represents one of the most intellectually stimulating, financially rewarding, and socially impactful career paths available today. The convergence of big data maturation, artificial intelligence mainstream adoption, business intelligence evolution, and cross-industry digital transformation has created the perfect conditions for data science career success.
