AlixPartners has embraced a hybrid work model to provide flexibility and support our employees’ work-life integration. Our hybrid model combines a mix of in-person at an AlixPartners office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with remote working options for Monday and Friday.

What you’ll do

In this important role on AlixPartners IT Data Engineering & Shared Services team, you will provide on-site engineering and support for our Database, Data Engineering and all database-related services. This includes managing data engineering ETL tasks, administration of Spark clusters, database schema design, SQL server implementation, operation, and monitoring.

The Data Engineer is a full-time role located in London, and reports to the Data Engineering Director. Paid relocation is not available for this position.

  • Assist in building, maintaining, and optimising data pipelines to support analytics and reporting.
  • Work with senior data engineers to ingest, transform, and validate data from multiple sources.
  • Support the migration and integration of datasets across cloud and on-premises environments.
  • Monitor data workflows to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and reliability.
  • Perform basic data cleaning, quality checks, and troubleshooting of pipeline issues.
  • Collaborate with analysts, developers, and business stakeholders to understand data needs.
  • Learn and apply best practices in data engineering, including security, governance, and documentation.
  • Administration of Databricks Spark clusters and SQL Warehouse.
  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to shared engineering standards.
  • Maintain the integrity of databases and applications (as directed) upon which the business units rely for uninterrupted business operations.
  • Run and monitor database and application performance queries; design and implement testing routines to identify and resolve (de-bug) conflicts and potential operating malfunctions, using the Enterprise monitoring solutions and other utilities.
  • Adhere to and perform against internal SLAs to the business.
  • Participate in the monthly maintenance cycle as well as the on-call rotation.
  • Effectively communicate within the database team to ensure all team members are adequately informed of changes, detected issues, and other items necessary to maintain high levels of user satisfaction.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve malfunctions with databases, applications, and related infrastructure; escalate to other technology support resources as needed.
  • Schedule, communicate, perform and monitor both regular and ad hoc database maintenance activities in accordance with defined policies and procedures.
  • Administer database systems security and assign appropriate access privileges to end-users; monitor security issues and report potential problems and concerns.

What you’ll need

  • Bachelors’ degree preferred.
  • Minimum one (1) year of commercial experience; SQL DBA/Data Engineer preferred*
  • Familiar with Data Engineering applications such as Databricks and Azure Data Factory
  • Basic PySpark and/or Python programming knowledge
  • Familiar with ETL processes and techniques
  • Administration of Microsoft SQL Server 2017/2019/2022 preferred
  • Basic T-SQL programming preferred
  • Database performance monitoring, tuning and optimization preferred
  • Experience in Cloud Services (e.g., Azure, Amazon)
  • Experience in a 24x7 service delivery model supporting mission-critical business operations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Willingness to work outside of normal UK. business hours, and as unique projects/needs arise
  • Ability to work full time in an office and remote environment; physically able to sit/stand at a computer and work in front of a computer screen for significant portions of the workday
