As part of the Transport UK Group, West Midlands Trains delivers around 1,300 train journeys a day, for more than 60 million passengers a year, across our two brands - West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway. We are committed to delivering a safe and reliable train service, by investing in our fleet of trains, stations and employees.

As part of this investment, we are seeking a Data Engineer based in Birmingham on a Full-Time permanent basis. This is a key role in the Business Intelligence team to extract data from existing systems, load it into a central data lake and transform it into useful business intelligence information/dashboards. You will ensure good data quality by cleaning and collating required data streams into appropriate formats for supply to West Midlands Train’s central system and DfT’s Rail Data Marketplace.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain WMT's database architecture and data processing systems with the support of WMT’s IT department
  • Extract data from multiple sources, ensuring its accuracy and integrity when stored
  • Load Data into WMT's central data warehouse/data lake
  • Ensure data quality processes are embedded into workflows and within data sources
  • Define and develop APIs/automation to extract data from core systems into WMT's central data warehouse / data lake and potentially to external stakeholders
  • Work closely with WMT department to migrate datasets into WMT’s central data architecture
  • Structure data in the data warehouse to ensure scalable approach as more data is migrated across
  • Define metadata necessary for synthesis of various datasets across WMT
  • Transform data into useable BI reporting outputs replicating or enhancing current reporting and determine reporting frequency with end users
  • Develop and deploy flexible data access tools/interactive dashboards, led by end users and the wider BI team
  • Work closely as a key member of WMT’s BI team, utilising the experience and knowledge of other team members to jointly deliver successful data outcomes and BI for WMT
  • Data pipeline maintenance/testing. Test the reliability and performance of each part of a system throughout development and roll out
  • Monitor the stability of the data warehouse, undertake regular maintenance to ensure the system runs efficiently and effectively
  • Interpret data for specific questions from WMT’s departments

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

  • Able to build strong working relationships within the company, particularly at peer group level, interpret end user requests into the development of useful tools that add value and increase efficiency.
  • Experience of the rail industry would be preferable, having an understanding of the way that the rail industry is structured, operates and the type of data produced will greatly help in the use of that data to create value adding outputs
  • Ability to respond to a wide range of complex and conflicting interests and to communicate effectively with key stakeholders in their resolution.
  • Self-starter with the ability to lead mini development processes
  • Conscientious approach to work, to undertake sufficient testing, checking and to provide assurance that data quality is good and reporting outputs are accurate and reflective.
