The opportunity

We are looking for two Data Engineers who are keen to play an integral role in building reliable, secure, and well-governed data solutions.

As part of our growth, we are creating our Data Engineering capability, a team which will be focused on the continued development of our enterprise data warehouse, built using Azure Synapse Analytics and hosted within Azure. This will support reporting and analytics delivery across the business allowing the team to shape well-structured data pipelines and models that are aligned to business needs.

Working closely with data analytics, reporting leads and business stakeholders, you will help co-create data products that are insightful, maintainable, and scalable.

What you will be doing

As a Data Engineer key projects you will support include the development of trusted datasets for reporting in power BI, improvements to data pipeline efficiency, and support for compliance-related audits and data controls.

Key Responsibilities and Objectives

  • Build, maintain, and improve scalable data pipelines using Azure Data Factory and Azure Synapse.
  • Design and implement structured data layers using medallion architecture principles (bronze, silver, gold).
  • Create and optimise SQL logic to prepare data for use in Power BI reports and ad-hoc analysis.
  • Ensure all data processes meet high standards of security, access control, and regulatory compliance, working closely with IT and Risk teams.
  • Collaborate with analysts and business users to understand reporting needs and build reusable, trusted data sources.
  • Monitor and maintain data quality, metadata, and pipeline performance.
  • Contribute to backlog planning and continuous delivery of incremental improvements.
  • Document data transformations, business logic, and system architecture clearly and accessibly.
  • Stay informed of new Azure features, data engineering best practices, and compliance obligations (e.g. data retention, auditability, and access governance).

About you

To succeed in the role, you will be/have:

  • Degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field (or equivalent industry experience).
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Azure data services, including Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Data Factory, and Azure Data Lake Gen2.
  • Proficient in SQL, with demonstrable experience writing efficient, well-structured queries for data manipulation, transformation, and reporting.
  • Experience in designing and building data pipelines (ETL/ELT) that are reliable, scalable, and maintainable.
  • Understanding of data warehousing concepts, including star/snowflake schemas, dimensional modelling, and data layer structuring.
  • Familiarity with structured approaches such as the medallion architecture (bronze, silver, gold data layers) for managing data quality and governance.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with data analysts, reporting leads, and business stakeholders to deliver accessible and trusted datasets.
  • Strong attention to detail, with a structured and methodical approach to documentation and development.
  • Awareness of data privacy, access control, and security principles in a regulated environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proven ability to manage workload, prioritise tasks, and deliver work to agreed deadlines.

Location

We are flexible on location and therefore, this role could be based at home but will require monthly travel to our Leeds office.

Process

  1. Initial telephone screening (30 mins)
  2. Technical assessment (45 mins)
  3. Interview (1 hour)

Pre-Employment Checks for Data Science Jobs: DBS, References & Right-to-Work and more Explained

Pre-employment screening in data science reflects the discipline's unique position at the intersection of statistical analysis, machine learning innovation, and strategic business intelligence. Data scientists often have privileged access to comprehensive datasets, proprietary algorithms, and business-critical insights that form the foundation of organisational strategy and competitive positioning. The data science industry operates within complex regulatory frameworks spanning GDPR, sector-specific data protection requirements, and emerging AI governance regulations. Data scientists must demonstrate not only technical competence in statistical modelling and machine learning but also deep understanding of research ethics, data privacy principles, and the societal implications of algorithmic decision-making. Modern data science roles frequently involve analysing personally identifiable information, financial data, healthcare records, and sensitive business intelligence across multiple jurisdictions and regulatory frameworks simultaneously. The combination of analytical privilege, predictive capabilities, and strategic influence makes thorough candidate verification essential for maintaining compliance, security, and public trust in data-driven insights and automated systems.
