Job Summary

We are seeking a highly capable and versatile Data Engineer with strong Business Intelligence and Data Analytics expertise to support the Bank's 2025 Priority Change Initiatives. This hybrid role bridges engineering and analytics to enable the delivery of enterprise-wide reporting, embedded data governance, and analytics at scale.

The successful candidate will be responsible for building and maintaining scalable data pipelines and infrastructure (Data Lake), while also taking a leading role in the execution, enhancement, and maintenance of Enterprise Business Intelligence capabilities using Power BI. They will work closely with business teams to transform complex data into actionable insights, curate reusable semantic models, and drive data-driven decision-making across departments.

This is a critical position that supports the implementation of the Bank's Data Strategy, Target Operating Model (TOM), and Enterprise BI agenda - enabling high-quality, governed, and self-service analytics within a growing financial institution.

Key Work Outputs and Accountabilities

This role offers the opportunity to shape both the data foundation and analytics capability of the Bank as it undertakes an ambitious digital and data transformation.

Data Engineering

  • Design, build, and maintain secure, scalable, and high-performance ETL/ELT pipelines for structured and semi-structured data across internal and external sources.
  • Lead the ingestion, transformation, and integration of data into the Data Lake, ensuring consistency with governance, lineage, and quality standards.
  • Develop and maintain reusable data models, transformation logic, and metadata to support enterprise reporting and analytics use cases.
  • Ensure data quality through automated validation, reconciliation frameworks, and monitoring mechanisms.

Business Intelligence & Analytics

  • Lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of enterprise Power BI reporting solutions in collaboration with business stakeholders.
  • Develop user-centric dashboards, reports, and semantic models that reflect business priorities, KPIs, and regulatory requirements.
  • Build and optimise the Power BI environment, including workspace governance, dataset performance, data refresh schedules, and usage monitoring.
  • Support self-service BI enablement by curating certified datasets, providing documentation, and training users across departments.
  • Partner with business functions to understand analytical needs, translate them into technical requirements, and deliver fit-for-purpose solutions.
  • Perform exploratory and root-cause data analysis to support business investigations, strategic initiatives, and regulatory reporting.

Cross-Cutting Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design and implementation of the Data Strategy and Data Governance Framework, embedding analytics and engineering standards.
  • Document pipeline logic, business rules, semantic layers, and data transformations to ensure transparency and traceability.
  • Collaborate with Data Architects, Data Governance Leads, Business Analysts and Information Security to ensure alignment with TOM and compliance standards.
  • Actively contribute to data maturity uplift across the Bank by sharing best practices, upskilling users, and promoting a data-driven culture.

Key Deliverables

  • Fully operational, secure, and scalable ETL/ELT pipelines integrated with the Bank's Data Lake and BI environments.
  • A governed Power BI environment, featuring enterprise-standard dashboards, certified datasets, and optimised data models.
  • High-quality analytics outputs supporting strategic and operational decision-making across all Bank functions.
  • End-to-end documentation of data pipelines, transformations, semantic models, and analytics use cases.
  • Embedded monitoring, alerting, and data quality controls across both engineering and BI layers.
  • Embed procedure and TOM developed for a full end to end alignment and delivery across the Business
  • Increased self-service analytics adoption through accessible reporting assets and effective business engagement.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Knowledge & Experience

  • Demonstrable experience in data engineering, analytics, and business intelligence within financial services or a regulated industry.
  • Strong understanding of data warehouse/lakehouse architecture, data integration, and transformation processes.
  • Proven track record of building and maintaining enterprise Power BI solutions, from requirement gathering to deployment and support.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams including analysts, developers, architects, and business stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with industry frameworks such as DAMA-DMBOK and BCBS 239.

  • Advanced skills in SQL, Power BI (DAX, Power Query, data modelling), and a programming language such as Python or PySpark.
  • Hands-on experience with data pipeline orchestration tools (e.g., Azure Data Factory, dbt, Apache Airflow).
  • Strong understanding of cloud data platforms (e.g., Azure Synapse, Snowflake, or AWS Redshift).
  • Familiarity with version control (e.g., Git), CI/CD pipelines, and data performance tuning techniques.
  • Experience with data governance, cataloguing, and lineage tools is advantageous.

Soft Skills

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with an ability to translate data into insights and business value.
  • Strong communication and storytelling skills; able to clearly present data findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Highly collaborative and delivery-focused, with a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Detail-oriented, self-motivated, and comfortable working in dynamic, low-maturity environments.

How to Find Hidden Data Science Jobs in the UK Using Professional Bodies like the RSS, BCS & More

The data science job market in the UK is thriving—but also increasingly competitive. As organisations in finance, healthcare, retail, government, and tech accelerate digital transformation, the demand for data talent has soared. Yet many of the best data science jobs are never posted publicly. They’re shared behind closed doors—within professional networks, at invite-only events, or through member-only mailing lists and specialist interest groups. These “hidden” roles are often filled through referrals, collaborations, or direct outreach to trusted experts. In this guide, we’ll show you how to unlock these hidden opportunities by engaging with key UK professional bodies such as the Royal Statistical Society (RSS), BCS (The Chartered Institute for IT), and Turing Society, plus communities like PyData and AI UK. You’ll learn how to use directories, CPD events, and networks to move beyond job boards—and into roles where you’re approached, not just applying.

How to Get a Better Data Science Job After a Lay-Off or Redundancy

Redundancy can be tough to face, especially in a competitive field like data science. But it’s important to know: your experience, analytical thinking, and modelling skills are still in demand. Across sectors like healthcare, finance, e-commerce, government and AI startups, UK employers continue to seek data scientists who can deliver value through insight, prediction, and automation. This guide will walk you through how to bounce back from redundancy with purpose and clarity—whether you're a data analyst looking to step up, a mid-level data scientist, or a machine learning specialist seeking a better-aligned opportunity.
