Position: Data Architect

Contract type: Full Time/Permanent

Reporting to: Head of Data

Location: London


Overview of role

As the Data Architect you will join a small but powerful data team, with a mission to transform Zodiac Maritime into a data driven organisation. You will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining Zodiac Maritime’s enterprise data architecture, ensuring alignment with business objectives and long-term scalability. Reporting to the Head of Data, this role will be responsible to define and maintain data standards, data models, and data governance frameworks to enable effective data management and analytics across the organization.


The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in data architecture, data modelling, and data governance, with hands-on experience in Azure Databricks and Unity Catalog for metadata management and scalable data & analytics.


Key responsibilities and primary deliverables


  • Define and enforce enterprise data architecture principles, policies, and standards in collaboration with the Head of Data.
  • Develop and maintain current (“as-is”) and future (“to-be”) data architecture blueprints, ensuring alignment with business needs.
  • Design and document conceptual, logical, and physical data models, optimizing for Azure Databricks Lakehouse implementation and Unity Catalog integration.
  • Implement and manage data cataloguing and metadata governance using Unity Catalog to contextualise data and ensure data discoverability, lineage, and compliance.
  • Support Head of Data to define data access, security, and sharing policies for the enterprise and work with the engineering team to implement policies within Azure Databricks environments.
  • Work closely with business stakeholders, IT, and external partners to capture data requirements and translate them into scalable architectural solutions.
  • Ensure data architecture supports regulatory compliance, security, and data quality requirements.
  • Support Head of Data in guiding the adoption of Azure data services, including Databricks Dashboards, Databricks Genie, Unity Catalog and Power BI, while optimizing existing data structures.
  • Provide oversight on data integration strategies and work with data engineer on pipeline development & monitoring).


Skills profile

Relevant experience & education


  • Proven experience in data architecture, data modelling, and enterprise data strategy.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field
  • Ability to communicate complex data concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Expertise in designing and documenting data architectures (e.g., data warehouses, lakehouses, master/reference data models).
  • Hands-on experience with Azure Databricks, including:
  • Workspace and cluster configuration.
  • Delta Lake table design and optimization.
  • Integration with Unity Catalog for metadata management.
  • Proficiency with Unity Catalog, including:
  • Setting up data lineage and governance policies.
  • Managing access controls and data sharing.
  • Strong knowledge of data modelling tools (e.g., Erwin, PowerDesigner, SQL DBML).
  • Familiarity with data governance frameworks and tools.
  • Understanding of cloud security and compliance (e.g., GDPR, ISO 27001) in Azure environments.
