About the role:

The National Archives is looking for a Data Analyst with in-depth experience in design and data architecture, creating conceptual models and transforming them to logical models and physical schemas and in defining mappings / transformations between data models.

You will work in an open, transparent and collaborative environment, engaging with internal and external communities to share your work and learn new from others, maintaining your understanding of developing technologies that can be applied to archival content enhancement and to enable the re-use of public data.

About you:

As our Data Analyst, you will have a strong background in organising, managing, enriching and manipulating data, including structured and text-based information. You will have excellent experience of the relevant database technologies and programming languages and be highly skilled in structuring, converting, analysing and exploring data to reveal underlying patterns and stories. You will have the ability to think rigorously about the complex issues involved in data collection and manipulation and will enjoy working with records specialists to support access to the digital archive.

You will remain calm whilst working under pressure, dealing with a wide variety of tasks and will have experience in problem solving using data design. You will see opportunities for improvements and be able to communicate with both technical and non-technical audiences through appropriate medium.

Person specification

This is a full time post. However, requests for part-time working, flexible working and job share will be considered, taking into account at all times the operational needs of the Department. A combination of onsite and home working is available and applicants should be able to regularly travel to our Kew site for a minimum of 60% of their work time.

SC-level Security Clearance or willingness to obtain SC clearance may be required for this role and requires that you have lived in the UK for the last 3 years. The length of required residency may depend on individual circumstances.

Essential criteria:

Data technologies: Excellent skills in pattern analysis with a broad knowledge and experience of relevant technologies for encoding, cleansing, manipulating and analysing complex structured and unstructured data. For example, data encoded in XML, CSV, JSON; programmatic techniques in Python, Shell scripting, XSLT, SQL.,ETL Processes: Knowledge of how to extract data from various sources, including databases, APIs, and flat files. Demonstrable ability to clean, format, and transform data to meet the requirements of the target system. Skills in loading transformed data into target destinations or data models and vocabularies. Familiarity with relevant tools (for example, Talend, Informatica, Stitch, Pentaho).Data Migration Techniques: Understanding of different data migration strategies, including full migration, incremental migration, and real-time migration. Experience of planning and executing data migration projects, ensuring minimal downtime and maintaining data integrity.Problem-Solving: Ability to identify and resolve issues that arise during the ETL and data migration processes. Experience in debugging and optimising ETL workflows for better performance, demonstrating a proactive and solutions focused approach to problems.Data Governance: Understanding of data governance practices, including data quality; reference and master data; data interoperability. An appreciation of how data governance works with other governance structures within the organisation.Communication and relationships: Strong communication and relationship building skills, able to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders, support and host discussions within a multidisciplinary team, with potentially difficult dynamics, be an advocate for the team externally, and can manage differing perspectivesApproach to work: Exceptional accuracy and attention to detail. Proactive and tenacious in solving problems. Strong organisational skills, motivated to work both independently and as a project team member. Demonstrable ability to prioritise tasks and deliver high quality work to agreed deadlines. A commitment to developing new skills and sharing your expertise with others.

Desirable criteria:

Practical experience and knowledge of a range of database technologies (for example:, RDBMS, triple stores / linked data, graph databases) A strong focus on meeting user needs Experience or awareness of Agile methodologies Ability to manage projects (such as data migration projects), including planning, execution, and monitoring progress Good understanding of the value of records and archives
